This natural fiber, harvested from goats on the high plateaus of Mongolia, possesses exceptional thermoregulatory properties. Did you know that cashmere is up to three times more insulating than sheep's wool? Despite this thermal performance, it remains surprisingly lightweight. Why is cashmere expensive?

The price of cashmere is explained by the rarity and complexity of its harvest. The fiber is manually collected only once a year from the undercoat of Capra Hircus goats during their spring molt. It takes the production of four goats to make a single sweater. This artisanal process, combined with meticulous sorting of the longest and whitest fibers, justifies its high-end positioning.

To recognize exceptional cashmere, you need to look beyond the simple label. Quality depends above all on the fiber's Grade. Grade A, the finest and longest, guarantees a sweater that won't deform and will retain its luster. Good knitting should be regular and show some resistance when the stitch is slightly stretched.

Beware of sweaters that feel excessively soapy or too soft to the touch in the store. This can sometimes indicate excessive chemical treatment or the use of short fibers that will pill quickly. Quality cashmere becomes softer with each wash, revealing its true nature over time.

The number of plies: understanding the thickness of your knit

The number of plies indicates the quantity of material used to knit the garment, which determines its thickness and warmth. 2-ply cashmere is the classic: light and versatile, it can be worn next to the skin in spring or under a jacket in autumn. It's an essential in any woman's wardrobe.

For colder weather, you'll want to opt for 4, 8, or even 10-ply models. The higher the ply count, the denser, heavier, and more protective the sweater. Note, however, that the ply count does not define the intrinsic quality of the fiber, but simply the weight of the knit.

Which cashmere doesn't pill?

It's important to know that all cashmere can pill slightly at first. This phenomenon is simply the shedding of excess short fibers. However, high-quality cashmere, using long fibers (Grade A), will pill much less than an entry-level model. After two or three washes, pilling stabilizes and generally disappears on a premium knit.

Caring for cashmere is often a source of concern, yet this fiber loves water. Contrary to popular belief, machine washing is entirely possible and even recommended. Use a wool program, cold (maximum 30°C), with a minimal dose of special wool detergent. A slow spin (500 revolutions/minute) is crucial to avoid damaging the fiber.

To preserve the longevity of your garment, avoid wearing your sweater two days in a row. The fiber needs rest to regain its original shape. If small pills appear initially, use a specific cashmere comb. Finally, always dry your sweater flat on a towel, away from any direct heat source, to prevent it from losing its shape.
