Choosing a men's jeans cut starts with thigh width and the shape of the hem. Wash, pockets and details come afterwards. At Freeman T. Porter, our men's jeans cover slim, straight, slim straight, regular and wide cuts, in sizes 28 to 38 and priced between €100 and €130. Here is how to recognise them, what really distinguishes them and how to choose between slim and straight.

Men's jeans cuts at a glance

  • Five main cuts at Freeman: slim, straight, slim straight, regular and wide.
  • Read the cut at the thighs and hem: fitted, straight or tapered.
  • Straight is the most represented cut in our men's range: Eddy, Jimmy, Nolan, Victor, Taylor, Jhon and Theo.
  • Reference length: 82 to 84 cm inside leg on Eddy, depending on size.
  • Our models are 183 to 188 cm tall and wear size 31.

How do you recognise a men's jeans cut?

Three areas are enough. First the thighs: fitted, regular or roomy. Then the knee, where a cut may narrow (tapered) or open out (bootcut). Finally the hem: narrow at the ankle, equal to the knee or wide. Rise matters too, but less than for women: most men's jeans have a normal rise sitting on the hips.

The different men's jeans cuts

Slim (and skinny)

Slim is fitted from hips to ankles without clinging. Dustee Slim is the typical example: fitted hip to ankle, stretchy denim, deep black. Skinny goes further and hugs the leg, requiring highly elastic fabric. Slim fit gives the cleanest look under a jacket or with ankle boots. Our men's slim jeans collection includes 22 items.

Straight

Straight keeps the same width from knee to hem, with neither tight nor loose thighs. The most versatile cut, suiting every figure, dominates our range: Eddy in stretch denim, Nolan in thick vintage-look fabric, Victor in slightly stretchy raw selvedge denim, Theo in cotton, or Jhon, a carpenter-inspired straight cut with patch pockets. Find them in our men's straight jeans section.

Slim straight

Between slim and straight: closer at the thigh, with a leg staying straight to the hem. Jimmy, classic straight in washed grey denim, and Taylor, fitted straight in stretch fabric, belong here. Often the best choice if slim feels too tight and straight too wide. See our men's slim straight jeans.

Regular

Regular is straight with extra room at the hips and thighs, halfway between straight and relaxed. Comfort comes first: jeans for the whole day, sitting or standing. Our men's regular jeans collection includes 18 styles.

Tapered

Tapered is roomy above and gradually narrows to the ankle. It gives a modern shape with a hem that does not fall onto the shoe. At Freeman, it is found mainly in our men's tapered trousers and Derek, relaxed tapered trousers in soft denim with an elasticated waist.

Wide (loose, relaxed, baggy)

Roomy throughout, close to women's wide-leg. Loose and relaxed remain moderate; baggy sits lower on the hips with pronounced volume. It works well with chunky trainers. Our men's wide jeans section includes 9 styles.

What about men's bootcut?

Bootcut flares slightly below the knee to fit over a boot. It is uncommon in current men's ranges, and Freeman does not offer it at present.

Men's jeans cuts overview

  • Slim: fitted thighs, narrow hem, clean look. At Freeman: Dustee Slim.
  • Straight: regular thighs, hem as wide as the knee, the most versatile cut. At Freeman: Eddy, Nolan and Victor.
  • Slim straight: close-fitting thighs, straight leg, between slim and straight. At Freeman: Jimmy and Taylor.
  • Regular: roomy thighs, straight leg, for comfort. See our regular collection.
  • Tapered: roomy above, narrow at the ankle, tapered leg. At Freeman: Derek trousers.
  • Wide, loose, relaxed: roomy throughout, casual look. See our wide jeans collection.

Which jeans for which style?

The cut also expresses your style. For a smarter look, under a jacket or with dress shoes, slim or slim straight in raw or dark denim looks cleanest: Victor and Jimmy are good examples. For everyday casual style, medium-wash straight jeans (Eddy, Theo) work with sweatshirts and shirts alike. Workwear means straight cuts and functional details, such as Jhon's patch pockets and side loop. If you follow the volume trend, wear wide or tapered jeans with chunky trainers and a shorter top.

Slim or straight: which should you choose?

Slim is fitted to the hem; straight leaves thigh room and falls straight onto the shoe. Choose slim if you are fairly slender, wear ankle boots or low-top trainers, or want a smarter look under a jacket. Choose straight for muscular thighs, an all-purpose pair or if unsure: it is the least risky choice. Our view: a first or only pair of jeans should be straight.

What is the difference between regular and straight?

Both have straight legs. Straight is cleaner, with a classic straight thigh. Regular adds room at the hips and thighs. The difference is barely visible in photos; in wear, regular is more comfortable sitting down.

Which cut suits your body shape?

The right cut rebalances the figure, adding volume where needed and reducing it elsewhere. A few pointers:

  • Tall and slim: slim or slim straight. Avoid very wide cuts that hang loosely.
  • Shorter men: slim or slim straight, without too much fabric bunching on the shoe. A well-placed hem lengthens the leg.
  • Muscular thighs: regular or tapered, with room above without widening the hem.
  • Fuller build: straight or regular in stretch denim for comfort. Slim emphasises too much.

For women's cuts, including bootcut, flare, boyfriend and barrel, see our jeans cut guide, which also helps you choose for your body shape.

Length, fabric and alterations

Length. Our men's jeans have no length option: each style has its own. Eddy has an 82 cm inside leg in size 28, 83 cm in 31 and 84 cm in 34. Compare with jeans that fit. If the new pair is too long, hemming is straightforward: our guide to hemming jeans explains how.

Fabric. Stretch denim (Eddy, Taylor, Dustee Slim) makes slim and slim straight more comfortable. Rigid or raw denim holds its shape and develops a patina over time, as with raw selvedge Victor. Thick denim like Nolan's gives a more structured leg.

Size. A fitted cut needs the exact size; a roomy one is more forgiving. Our men's jeans run from W28 to W38: for conversion, see US jeans sizes; for measuring, our jeans sizing guide.

Men's jeans cuts FAQ

How many men's jeans cuts are there?

Six or seven families recur: skinny, slim, straight, regular, tapered, bootcut and wide (loose, relaxed, baggy). Brands add variants such as slim straight.

Which men's jeans cut suits every body shape?

Straight. It squeezes neither thigh nor calf, falls neatly onto the shoe and works with trainers and dress shoes.

What does W32 L32 mean on men's jeans?

W32 indicates a 32-inch waist, French size 42 in our men's chart. L32 indicates a 32-inch inside leg, around 81 cm.

Are slim jeans necessarily skin-tight?

No. Slim is fitted; skinny is skin-tight. The two are often confused. Stretch slim jeans like Dustee Slim follow the leg without squeezing.

Do mom jeans exist for men?

Mom jeans (high-rise, roomy hips, tapered leg) are a women's cut. For men, tapered is the closest shape.

If you keep only one pair, choose straight stretch denim, medium blue or raw: it moves effortlessly from work to weekends. Slim and slim straight come next for a cleaner look. Before ordering, compare the page's inside-leg measurement with jeans you already wear: it is the surest way to avoid hemming.
