Hips wider than shoulders? Bootcut or flare jeans restore balance. Broad shoulders? Wide-leg or boyfriend jeans add volume below. Defined waist? A high rise highlights it. Choosing jeans for your body shape means working with two things: leg cut and rise. This guide for women and men covers six body shapes, questions about tummies, hips and petite height, then men's fit pointers, each with the closest Freeman T. Porter styles.

Choosing jeans for your body shape at a glance

  • A shape (pear): straight, bootcut or flare, mid-rise.
  • V shape (inverted triangle): wide-leg, boyfriend, barrel or flare.
  • H shape (rectangle): barrel, boyfriend and high-rise to create curves.
  • X and figure-eight shapes: high-rise, slim or flare that follow a defined waist.
  • O shape (apple): straight or bootcut, mid-rise, stretch denim.
  • Petite height: high-rise and 7/8 length, or our Denim Team Petite styles.

How do you identify your body shape?

Stand in front of a mirror in underwear, feet flat, and compare three areas: shoulder width, waist and hip width. For greater accuracy, measure your waist and hips with a tape measure, as explained in our jeans sizing guide. There is no good or bad body shape: some cuts simply suit each one better. Choosing for your figure mainly means knowing where you want to add or reduce volume.

Which jeans suit each women's body shape?

A shape (hips wider than shoulders)

This is the most common shape. The aim is to balance the lower body without emphasising the hips. Good cuts include straight jeans that do not squeeze the hips, and flared cuts. Bootcut or flare jeans like Jessy, flaring from the knees, lengthen the legs and balance the figure. Choose a mid-rise: a low rise cuts across the widest point. Avoid skinny jeans, which accentuate the difference between hips and shoulders. See our flare jeans collection.

V shape (shoulders wider than hips)

The shoulders dominate and the hips are narrow. The aim is to add volume below. Wide-leg, boyfriend, barrel and flare jeans work best. Our very wide, straight-cut Agatha or 7/8 barrel Rosalia provide that volume. Details such as patch pockets and light washes at the hips have the same effect. Avoid very fitted slim jeans, which heighten the contrast. See our wide-leg jeans collection.

H shape (rectangle)

Shoulders, waist and hips are aligned, with little waist definition. The aim is to create curves. A high rise defines a waist, while barrel and boyfriend cuts add volume at the hips. Our mid-rise boyfriend Maeva or a barrel cut like Rosalia work well. Straight jeans are also an option, with a belt to define the waist.

X shape (hourglass)

Shoulders and hips are equally wide, with a narrow, defined waist. The hourglass shape suits almost every cut, provided the waist is highlighted. A high rise is essential, with slim or flare cuts that follow the curves. Our Sophy, a 7/8 slim with a fitted straight leg, or a flared cut flatter this shape. Avoid very loose cuts without a belt, which hide the waist.

Figure-eight shape

Similar to the X, with fuller curves at the hips and bust. The same rules apply: high-rise and a cut that follows the body. Stretch denim, such as our super-stretch Madie, follows the curves without squeezing. Flare and bootcut balance the hips.

O shape (round tummy)

Volume is concentrated at the tummy, and the legs are often slim. The aim is comfort at the waist and a leg that elongates. Straight or bootcut jeans, mid-rise and in stretch denim, are the most flattering. Avoid low rises that emphasise the tummy and cuts that are very fitted at the thighs.

  • V shape: wide-leg, boyfriend, barrel or flare, high- or mid-rise. Avoid very fitted slim. At Freeman: Agatha and Rosalia.
  • H shape: barrel, boyfriend or straight with a belt, high-rise. Avoid shapeless cuts. At Freeman: Maeva and Rosalia.

  • Figure-eight shape: stretch slim, flare or bootcut, high-rise. Avoid overly tight rigid denim. At Freeman: Madie.
  • O shape: straight or bootcut, mid-rise. Avoid low-rise and slim. See our straight jeans collection.

Which jeans should you choose if you have a tummy?

Three rules and one styling tip: tucking a flowing top into high-rise jeans defines the waist without squeezing. First, rise: high or mid-rise covers and supports the tummy, whereas low-rise emphasises it. Next, fabric: stretch denim follows the body without constricting and is more comfortable sitting down than rigid pure cotton. Finally, cut: straight or bootcut balances the figure better than skinny. Our super-stretch straight Madie ticks all three boxes. Find more options in our women's straight jeans section.

Which jeans suit fuller hips and thighs?

Flared cuts are most flattering: bootcut and flare open below the knee and balance the volume of the upper leg. Straight jeans with some room at the thighs also work. Avoid skinny jeans, which follow every curve, and light washes concentrated on the thighs. Explore our bootcut collection.

Which jeans suit petite or tall women?

Petite: choose a high rise to elongate the figure and 7/8 or cropped lengths that reveal the ankle. Flares worn with heels also elongate. Our shorter styles are grouped in Denim Team Petite: Maeva, for example, has a 65 to 67 cm inside leg.

Tall, long legs: every cut is an option, provided you find the right length. Flares and extra-long wide-leg jeans showcase the legs. Our longer styles are in Denim Team Grande: Jessy reaches an 85 cm inside leg in size 33.

Which jeans suit each men's body shape?

  • V shape (broad shoulders): straight or regular jeans balance the upper body.
  • H shape (rectangle): slim or fitted straight.
  • O shape: straight or regular in stretch denim, never slim.
  • Muscular thighs: regular or tapered.

Our men's jeans fit guide explains each cut with Eddy, Jimmy and Dustee Slim. To understand all women's cuts before choosing, read our jeans cut guide.

FAQ: choosing jeans for your body shape

Which jeans make the figure look slimmer?

Dark jeans (raw, black or charcoal), high-rise, straight or bootcut. Dark, even washes have a more slimming effect than light washes.

Which body shapes suit mom jeans?

Mom jeans (high-rise, roomy hips, tapered leg) suit H and V shapes, adding curves. They are less flattering on an A shape because they add volume at the hips. Freeman does not currently offer them; a cropped boyfriend is a close alternative.

Which body shapes suit push-up jeans?

Push-up jeans have seams and pockets positioned to shape the bottom. They especially suit H and V shapes with less pronounced bottoms.

Can the same body shape wear several cuts?

Yes. These tips are guidelines, not restrictions. Style matters as much as shape: jeans you love and feel good in are always the right choice.

Should you take the same size in every cut?

Not always. A fitted cut needs the exact size; a loose cut may run large. Our product pages tell you with β€œtrue to size” or β€œruns large”.

Use these pointers as a starting point, not restrictions. First identify what you want to highlight (waist, legs or hips), choose the cut that does that, then adjust the rise. If you are torn between two styles, mid-rise straight jeans remain the easiest to wear, whatever your body shape.
